The Most Unusual Things People Have Built Homes From

Believe it or not, a fair number of Americans live in modular homes — and with good reason: the average modular home options cost approximately $62,600 on average, compared to $272,200 for an on-site single family home. While the term “modular home” may make you think of sleek, futuristic, Jetsons-esque houses, these are simply homes that were produced piece by piece in a factory setting and then shipped to the location, rather than being constructed on site.

If you’re interested in truly unique dwellings, however, check out some of these one-of-a-kind residences:

An Old Airport

When a Wyoming rancher bought an old airport for his horses, he had no idea the entire 640-acre site would actually become a small town. Bar Nunn, Wyoming became a full-fledged town in 1982, and believe it or not, they’ve made no effort to disguise the remnants of the airport. In fact, many of the old hangars are now being used as office space.

Sets From “The Phantom Menace”

Believe it or not, the movie sets that made up Anakin Skywalker’s hometown, Mos Espa, have been put to good use. The buildings are currently occupied by a group of Tunisians as a settlement. According to a newspaper report, the group is making money by selling old film props left on location.

Garbage

This small settlement in China was built entirely from scrap material and was ungoverned by any health and safety regulations. Fortunately, it’s not home to anyone currently, as it was demolished in the 1990s. At its height, the small city consisted of 300 interconnected tower blocks.

The Side of a Mountain

Nothing says peace and quiet quite like a massive mountain, but while lots of people dream of living on top of a mountain, not too many people think of dwelling in one. However, that’s exactly what the monks who inhabit Xuan Kong Si are doinge. The structures have been in place on the side of a mountain for over 1,500 years.

While modular home options might seem new and groundbreaking, they are not nearly as outlandish as some of the world’s bizarre living spaces. A custom modular home includes all the spaces and amenities you’re used to, but is often more environmentally friendly — not to mention inexpensive — than a traditional property. If you’re considering purchasing your first home, look into the advantages of modular homes today.

That is, if you can’t find an unoccupied Star Wars movie set to take up residence in.
